FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion University golf coach Mark Gaynor has announced the addition of two players, Jonathan Lavin of Askim, Sweden, and Peter McGibney of Westport, Conn., to the Patriot program. Both will enroll this fall and play for FMU in 2006-07.
Lavin, 6-1 177-pounds, is a product of Katrinelundsgymnasiet school. He will enter FMU as a freshman.
He won his school championship in 2003, placed first at the 2004 Chalmers Junior Open, was second at the 2004 Swedish Junior Championships, and has made national team appearances. He recently finished third at the Rosén Open in Skaftö, Sweden, with a three-round total of five-under-par.
McGibney, 6-3 223-pounds, is transferring to FMU from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, and will have two years of eligibility.
This past year, he compiled a 76.7 stroke average and tied for 28th place at the 2006 NAIA regional tournament. He was the Rangers’ top finishers in eight of nine tournaments, and posted five Top-10 showings.
This past June, he finished 20th at the Irish Youths’ Amateur Open Championship.
He is a product of St. Michaels College (high school) in Dublin, Ireland. He is a past All-Ireland National High School Match-Play champion.
Francis Marion is beginning its second year of transitioning to NCAA Division I membership. The Patriots tallied a 67-63-5 mark last season, including four Top-5 finishes.
Gaynor previously announced the signing of Christopher Couch of Summerville.
