FLORENCE, SC – Freshman forward Clay Davis scored the match’s lone goal in the 38th minute as North Georgia College & State University edged Francis Marion University 1-0, Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20) in Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer action, ruining the Patriots’ Senior Day festivities.
North Georgia moves to 6-9-1 overall and to 2-3 in the PBC, while Francis Marion drops to 4-11-0 and 1-4 with its seventh one-goal loss of the year.
Davis took a cross from Brandon Byers and the scored the match-winning goal at the 37:07 mark. It was the second goal of 2007 for Davis.
Francis Marion outshot the Saints 10-7 and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, but was unable to put through a tying score. North Georgia senior goalkeeper Brandon Kirksey registered three saves en route to his sixth shutout of the year which account for all the Saints’ wins. FMU freshman goalkeeper Clark Richeson made two stops in the loss.
Francis Marion recognized five seniors before the match: forward Jonathan Bartomioli, midfielder Biagio Galle, defender-midfielder Matthew Gourie, defender Mike Kropp, and midfielder Joey Pineo.
FMU plays host to Catawba College on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the squad’s final home match of the season. North Georgia plays host to Georgia Southwestern State University on next Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
