#10 Eagles outlast Francis Marion 3-1

FLORENCE, SC – Carson-Newman College scored a pair of first-half goals and the 10th-ranked Eagles went on to claim a 3-1 non-conference win over a pesky Francis Marion University squad, Saturday afternoon (Sept. 22) in men’s college soccer action.

Carson-Newman stays unbeaten at 8-0-0, while the Patriots (3-6-0) see their two-match winning streak snapped.

The Patriots will play at Newberry College, Wednesday at 4 p.m., while the Eagles play host to Lincoln Memorial University, the same afternoon also at 4 p.m.

Senior Kapil Davis gave Carson-Newman a 1-0 advantage at the 10:00 mark when he headed in a cross from Everardo Flores.  The margin doubled to 2-0 in the 32nd minute as Cameron Eades gathered in a short pass from Jakop Storhaug and found the back of the net with a 6-yard shot.

FMU has two good scoring opportunities in the opening half, but freshman Ivan Juric missed wide left on a 15-yard shot behind the Eagle defense and freshman Juan Rivas miss-handled a pass that put him one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Freshman Joseph Johns upped the lead to 3-0 with a tap-in shot after a short cross from Omar Cooke at 85:10.  Francis Marion got on the scoreboard with 48 seconds left – only the third goal allowed by Carson-Newman all season.  Rivas fired a shot that glanced off the crossbar and back to sophomore Jared Beauchamp who scored on the 10-yard follow-up shot.

Eagles’ goalkeeper Jordan Moore recorded two saves, while FMU junior Nick Krywyj made six stops.  Carson-Newman outshot the Patriots 17-7 and led 8-3 in corner kicks.
