Nedervelt scores twice in 4-0 Francis Marion win

FLORENCE, S.C. – Junior midfielder Kiersten Nedervelt scored the first two goals of her career to help lead Francis Marion University to a 4-0 road win at South Carolina State University, Tuesday night (Oct. 23) in women’s soccer action.

Francis Marion (8-6-1) outshot the Bulldogs (2-13-0) 21-6 and the Patriots took the only two corner kicks of the match.

Senior goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin only had to make one save en route to her fifth shutout of the year and 14th of her career.

Sophomore Angela Salem gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when she scored off an assist from Ashley Fortune.  FMU played 65 minutes with only 10 players after Fortune was issued a red card in the 25th minute.

Nedervelt scored the first of her two tallies on a penalty kick in the 50th minute. Sophomore Kirby Stenard, the nation’s 11th-leading goal scorer, used an assist from Salem to make it a 3-0 contest in the 88th minute, and Nedervelt concluded the scoring off an assist from M.A. Burrows with 1:40 left in the match. Stenard now has 13 goals in 15 matches this season.

Francis Marion will play its final home match of 2007 on Friday when the Patriots entertain the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay at 4 p.m.
