Burrows’ two goals reduces Phoenix to ashes

FLORENCE, S.C. Freshman midfielder M.A. Burrows scored a pair of second-half goals, the first tallies of her career, and Francis Marion University claimed a soggy 3-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Friday afternoon (Oct. 26) in women’s soccer action.

Francis Marion (9-6-1) completes its home schedule 6-0-0 and has now won 10 straight at home and is unbeaten in its last 14 matches in Florence.  The Patriots own an all-time home mark of 88-16-5.  Green Bay drops to 2-14-0 with its fifth consecutive loss, three of which have been by 3-1 decisions.

FMU senior goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin recorded five saves in the win, pushing her school career record for saves to 278.  Senior Brooke Wikgren registered three stops for the Phoenix.

Green Bay out shot the Patriots 6-3 during a scoreless first half.  Burrows, a product of Cardinal Newman School in Columbia, gave FMU a 1-0 in the 55th minute.  Green Bay failed to adequately clear a direct kick and the ball landed at the feet of Burrows who then scored on a 20-yard blast.  Less than three minutes later (at 57:08), the margin doubled to 2-0 when junior back Brandi Bonifay tapped in a direct kick by Angela Salem.

Burrows scored her second goal at the 63:34 mark.  Senior Brandi Sutphin’s direct kick was stopped, but not controlled, by Wikgren and Burrows was near the goal line to put in the rebound.  Her two-score performance marks the second consecutive match in which an FMU midfielder has registered their first two career goals as Kiersten Nedervelt turned the trick on Tuesday against South Carolina State University.

Freshman Sam Schiro came off the Green Bay bench to score her first career goal in the 87th minute.  Her 10-yard shot from the right side came after a pass from reserve Lydia Beyerlein.

Francis Marion out shot Green Bay 10-9 over the 90 minutes and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Francis Marion plays at North Carolina State University, Sunday at 2 p.m., while Green Bay travels to Winthrop University for a 1 p.m. match on the same day.
