FLORENCE, SC – Senior Ashley Fortune scored 1:33 into the second overtime period to give Francis Marion University a hard-fought 2-1 win over High Point University, Friday afternoon (Oct. 12) in women’s college soccer action.
Francis Marion evens it record at 5-5-1, while High Point drops to 4-5-2 following its fifth overtime contest of the year.
In the extra session, freshman Taylor Jenkins played the ball ahead to Fortune who beat High Point goalkeeper Marisa Abbott to the ball and chipped the sphere into the open net. It was her third goal of the season and 32nd of her career.
Senior Beckie Lesh gave High Point a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute with an unassisted goal. Following a long throw-in by the Panthers’ Megan Fielden, the loose ball was knocked around in the FMU 6-yard box. Lesh ended the sequence by ramming the ball into the net for her fourth score of 2007.
FMU nearly tied the match in the 30th minute, but a shot by Patriot sophomore Kirby Stenard bounced off the crossbar.
The Patriots evened the match at the 75:10 mark when Stenard tallied her team-leading eighth goal. Fortune began the sequence with a shot that eluded Abbott. FMU sophomore Angela Salem kept the ball from going over the end line and then fed a streaking Stenard for the short 3-yard shot into the open net. Stenard ranks among the top 30 scorers in NCAA Division I.
Both teams recorded eight shots, while High Point held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. FMU senior goalkeeper Jacque Sutphin tallied five saves to run her FMU career record to 260 stops. Abbott made only one save as FMU scored on two of its three shots-on-goal.
Francis Marion plays host to Longwood University, Sunday at 2 p.m., while High Point travels to VMI on Sunday at 3 p.m.
