UNCP sweeps softball twinbill from Francis Marion

FLORENCE, SC – Freshman right-hander Martika Elmore saved the opener and won the second contest with a complete-game effort as UNC Pembroke swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from Francis Marion University by scores of 8-6 and 5-2, Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 20).

FMU (9-3, 2-2) has its eight-game winning streak snapped, while UNCP improves to 11-3 and is 4-0 in Peach Belt play for the first time ever.

The Patriots play at Lenoir-Rhyne College on Saturday for a 2 p.m. twinbill, while UNC Pembroke plays host to Wingate University for a noon doubleheader on Saturday.

Elmore pitched two hitless and scoreless innings to close out the 8-6 game-one victory.  It was her second save of the year.  Candace Evans (6-1) picked up the win.

After spotting FMU a 1-0 lead on an Allie Aleman RBI-single in the bottom of the first, UNCP stormed back to score eight unanswered runs through the second, third, and fourth innings.  A two-run double by Morgan Patrick put the Lady Braves up 2-1.  A two-run single by catcher Loren Bartz and an RBI double by Courtney Hill highlighted a four-run outburst in the fourth as UNCP went up 8-1.

Francis Marion scored twice in the fifth on a two-run double by Monica Wofford and three times in the sixth, on a solo homer by Jessica Birchmeier and a two-run shot by Michaela Wolf, to trim the margin to 8-6.  However, the Patriots could not rally in the seventh against Elmore.

Brittany Berrier, Carissa Dancer, Jelena Shaw, Anna Williamson and Patrick all had two hits for UNCP in the opener.

Wolf had a pair of hits for FMU and was tagged with loss on the mound, dropping her pitching mark to 8-2.

In the second game, UNCP grabbed a quick advantage on a three-run home run by Shaw in the top of the first.  It was her fourth round-tripper of the young season.  As in the first game, Shaw had two hits in the second contest, while also scoring three times.

The Patriots answered with a single run in the bottom of the first when Wofford hit a sacrifice fly.  The Lady Braves upped the margin to 5-1 when Shaw scored on a two-out FMU error in the third and Shaw scored on a single by Hill in the fifth.

Francis Marion managed a run in its half of the fifth frame when Wofford plated Shannan Tyson with a double to left center.  The Patriots then left five runners on base over the last two innings, but could not dent the scoreboard again.

Tyson, Wofford, and Melanie Bisek all had two hits for FMU in the second game.  Junior righty Jessie Alesi (1-1) was the losing pitcher.

Elmore struck out six and scattered eight hits in game two while improving her pitching mark to 4-0.
