SAVANNAH, Ga. (April 12) – The second-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University women's tennis team clinched its fifth straight and 15th overall Peach Belt Conference title with an 8-1 win over ninth-ranked Francis Marion University on Saturday afternoon at the AASU Tennis Complex.
The Lady Pirates (23-1, 10-0 PBC) won two of three doubles matches, then won all six singles matches in straight sets over the Patriots (18-1, 8-1 PBC). AASU's nationally second-ranked Iuliia Stupak defeated 10th-ranked Tereza Sykorova 6-0, 6-1 in a matchup of undefeated singles players at No. 1 singles. Sixth-ranked Johanna Dahlback defeated No. 25-ranked Sarka Vitkova 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. FMU's lone win came at No. 3 doubles as Sykorova and Magda Jezovicova were victorious 8-3.
The Patriot women will host eighth-ranked Clayton State University in a battle for second place in the PBC on Monday at 1 p.m.
The top-ranked AASU men downed 19th-ranked FMU 7-2. FMU ends its regular season with a 14-4 overall record and a 4-4 Peach Belt mark, while AASU improves to 21-0 and 8-0.
The nationally ranked Patriot doubles team of Franklyn Emmanuel and Oshada Wijemanne won at the No. 1 spot, but FMU trailed 2-1 heading into the singles competition. Francis Marion's Dilshod Sharifi captured a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
The Patriot men will return to Savannah next weekend for the PBC Tournament.
