Patriots outlast Bearcats on volleyball court

GREENWOOD, SC - Four Francis Marion University players, led by Jackie Phiel and Jessica Lombardi, posted double-doubles Friday night (Oct. 26) to lead the Patriots to a 20-30, 30-23, 28-30, 30-28, 16-14 victory over Lander University in Peach Belt Conference women's volleyball action.

FMU improves to 12-19 overall and 3-5 in the PBC, while Lander drops to 19-8 and 3-3.  The Patriots avenged a five-game loss to the Bearcats in Florence on Oct. 13.

Phiel registered 26 kills and 23 digs, while Lombardi compiled 24 kills, 22 digs, four blocks, and a pair of service aces.  Junior setter Jenna Kaiser handed out 66 assists, dug up a career-high 32 ballsand served two aces.  Freshman Kaitlin Straiter tallied career highs of 16 kills and 11 digs, while freshmen Kelsie Deaton and Karli Koralewski added 31 and 14 digs respectively for the Patriots.

For Lander, Kerri Sorensen had 18 kills and 18 digs, while Candace LaRocca added 58 assists and 20 digs. Kay Stewart chipped in 15 kills, Martina Camps 18 digs and three aces, Melissa Trippany 39 digs, and Ashley Ferry 26 digs.

Francis Marion plays at USC Aiken, Saturday at 3 p.m.
