Lombardi keys Patriot volleyball team to wins

BANNER ELK, NC - Behind a record-setting performance from junior hitter Jessica Lombardi, Francis Marion University took a pair of wins on the final day of the Lees-McRae College Invitational, Saturday (Oct. 6) in college volleyball action.

FMU downed Converse College in four games (24-30, 30-28, 30-14, 30-16) and Anderson University in three games (30-26, 30-22, 30-18).  The Patriots, now 9-16, will play host to local-rival Coker College, Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Smith University Center.

In the opener against the All-Stars, Lombardi recorded the first triple-double in team history with 15 kills, 10 digs, and a school-record 11 service aces.  She also recorded three blocks.  The previous record for aces was eight, and the total was also the most ever in Peach Belt Conference history.

Senior Jackie Phiel added 13 kills, while sophomore setter Jess O'Leary tallied 40 assists, 15 digs, and five blocks.  Freshman Kelsie Deaton dug up 12 balls and freshman Mallory Eggert had four blocks.

In the afternoon contest against Anderson, Phiel compiled 13 kills (against only one attack error), while Lombardi added 11 kills (against only two errors).  O'Leary handed out 47 assists and Krissy Mordini and Eggert had 13 and nine kills respectively.

On Friday night, the Patriots lost to the host school in five games: 30-21, 30-25, 25-30, 28-30, 15-9.  Mordini compiled 21 kills, while Lombardi had 20 kills and eight digs, Phiel had 17 kills and 13 digs, and O'Leary 54 assists and 12 digs.
