FMU: 23 years, 25 Buildings, No University Debt

Over the past 23 years, Francis Marion University, in partnership with the community, has undertaken one of the most ambitious building efforts of any comprehensive university in South Carolina. During that time, the university has built or extensively renovated 25 academic and instructional support buildings. This was accomplished without incurring any university debt or encumbering student tuition.

This transformational growth has reshaped both FMU’s main campus and revitalized downtown Florence. It also extended the university’s outreach through the construction of the FMU Freshwater Ecology Complex. Together, these projects have expanded curricular opportunities and strengthened the university’s impact across the Pee Dee region.

This modern era of campus growth began in 2003 with the construction of the Faculty/Alumni Cottage, marking the start of a significant period of on-campus development. In the years that followed, several major facilities were added to expand both the educational infrastructure and student amenities on campus. These included the Frank B. Lee Nursing Building, the Richardson Center for the Child, the Pee Dee Education Center and The Grille, a recreational dining venue for students, adjacent to the outdoor recreational pool.

The university expanded into downtown Florence in 2011 with the opening of the FMU Performing Arts Center, which became a catalyst for continued investment and revitalization in the city’s downtown area. In the years since, FMU has added the FMU Recording Studio and University Place, home to the Gately Gallery and the Kelley Center for Economic Development.

As graduate programs in nursing, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and clinical psychology were added, the university once again increased its downtown presence through projects including the Luther F. Carter Center for Health Sciences and the Leatherman Medical Education Complex. The C. Edward Floyd Medical Education Consortium Building, which will accommodate 3rd and 4th year medical school students and residents, will be completed in the summer of 2027.

In 2021, the university opened its newest campus with the construction of the FMU Freshwater Ecology Complex. Located approximately eight miles from the main campus, this unique facility includes fishery and water laboratories and a community conference center.

On the main campus, the School of Business/School of Education Building opened in the fall of 2024. The FMU Engineering Workshop, constructed to support the university’s growing industrial and mechanical engineering programs, also opened that year.

Today, some of the university’s oldest buildings – Founders Hall and the Cauthen Educational Media Center – are undergoing extensive renovations. Meanwhile, the 45,000-square-foot Forestry and Environmental Sciences Building, currently under construction, will house FMU’s newest academic program in forestry and is expected to be completed later this year.

The university’s campus transformation has enhanced student life, elevated academic quality, and positioned FMU as one of the most visually distinctive public universities in the state.

Throughout this aggressive growth, the university has incurred no general obligation debt, demonstrating what can be accomplished with a supportive legislative delegation and a generous philanthropic community.

Of course, our current and future students become the ultimate beneficiaries.”

With no institutional debt and a continuing focus on affordability and accessibility, FMU will continue to invest in programs and facilities that fulfill its mission and address the needs of a variety of constituencies.
