Neal leaves FMU prepped for the desk or the cockpit

Most college students come to campus with their heads in the clouds. Derek Neal was no different. Well, he was actually very different.

By the time Neal left Francis Marion University with his degree in Human Resources Management and Marketing in the spring class of 2021, he was not just a college graduate, but a former baseball player, and most importantly to him, a licensed pilot.

Originally from Goldsboro, N.C., Derek transferred to Francis Marion as a junior with the intent to continue his baseball career. After just one season on the diamond, his playing days were cut short with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With no sport left to occupy his down time, Neal took interest in learning to fly and set about earning his pilot’s license.

“I thought this was the best time to end my career and pursue something different,” Neal says. “We’ll see where that leads… There are (U.S. Air Force) planes I would love to fly on. That’s kind of a dream for me.”

Neal’s first stop out of college won’t be too far from his dream. As a civilian, Neal will be human resources manager at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base working with fellow civilian support staff throughout the sprawling installation.

He’s still plotting his career and says that the U.S. Air Force Reserves could be a possible next step, but for now, he’s pretty happy where he’s landed.

Whether his career takes him into a cockpit or behind a desk, Neal says that Francis Marion University’s School of Business has thoroughly prepared him for whatever he decides to do.

“The faculty at FMU is second to none,” Neal says. “They always give you one-on-one time, and they really care about how you’re doing. They welcomed me in with open arms and throughout my time here, they’ve just been awesome.”
