Description: Presents an overview of literature produced by African Americans from the mid-19th century to the present. Explores how African-American writers address issues surrounding gender, race, class, sexual orientation, and identity. Using poetry, novels, essays, autobiographies, short stories, and speeches, examines themes, literary movements, and the development of an African-American literary tradition. Authors include Frederick Douglass, Richard Wright, Jessie Fauset, Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and James Baldwin.
