The History Program at Francis Marion University offers course work in United States History, European History, Latin American History, and Non-Western History.  In collaboration with the History faculty, students can design special courses tailored to their needs and interests.  Through the study of History, students gain a better understanding of contemporary events, a knowledge of people in various times and places, critical thinking skills, and the ability to express themselves effectively in oral and written communication.  The experienced and well trained faculty maintains high standards of teaching and research.  The members of the History faculty hold doctorates from the following institutions: Duke University, Ohio University, Tulane University, University of South Carolina, and Yale University.

Because the History Program incorporates the elements of liberal education, students with the bachelor’s degree in History make their way into a wide variety of careers.  Many enter professional schools in law, business, and journalism or pursue graduate degrees in History and related fields.  Still others find careers in teaching, banking, writing, urban planning, insurance, advertising, public relations, government, and public service.  As these examples suggest, History is a discipline which teaches skills and knowledge with applications to many fields of endeavor.
