In 2022 more than 1,648 individual titles were banned from schools in the United States, and more than 50 organizations within the United States were actively working to ban books within our libraries and schools. Right now in South Carolina, there are ongoing campaigns against books labeled “too political” or “dangerous.”

In this class we will learn more about the history of book banning in our country and will read some of these “dangerous” texts for ourselves, including The Catcher in the Rye, The Handmaid’s Tale, Maus, All Boy’s Aren’t Blue, selections from critical race theory, and additional readings selected by the class.
