Library Specialist – Access Services (24-61)  

Francis Marion University and the James A. Rogers Library invite applications for a Library Specialist who, under the supervision of the Access Services Librarian, assists in training and supervising eight to twelve student assistants who perform various circulation tasks daily, using a shared library services platform.  Supervises circulation desk activities and makes periodic rounds and walk-through of the library building during the evening/night.  The normal work schedule is Sunday through Thursday, 2:30 pm – 11 pm; schedule changes during times when classes are not in session and modified summer hours.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assumes primary responsibility for Circulation Desk activities and student workers’ supervision all hours Sunday, and 5:00 pm until closing on Monday, shares responsibility for Circulation Desk activities Tuesday through Thursday afternoons/nights.
  • Ability to assist in the organizing and oversight of the physical maintenance of the library’s book and periodical collection. Assists with periodic encoding and inventory.
  • Ability to process returned inventory ensuring all holds are cleared and books are re-shelved accurately.
  • Ability to work with patrons and ensure any delinquencies are processed timely and accurately.
  • Ability to create and monitor delinquent users’ reports monthly.
  • Ability to manage requests from a Windows-based interface for Inter library Loan borrowing; ability to maintain online records for reserve materials.
  • Ability to operate in a work environment with limited supervision and to function independently, assisting with Access Services.
  • Ability to maintain an elevated level of accuracy, completeness, and thoroughness in work.

FMU Preferences: Bachelor’s degree preferred.  High school graduate and two years of library experience; or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  Thorough knowledge of integrated library systems, their operations, processes, and techniques.  Knowledge of procedures involved in library operations or capacity to acquire such knowledge rapidly.  Ability to precisely follow systematic methods of work with a consistent degree of accuracy.  Ability to supervise others. Ability to operate various electronic devices, including PCs, laptops, photocopiers, scanners, etc.     

 State Requirements: A high school diploma and relevant library experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for work experience.

Band/Level: 4/1

Salary: $31,561

Normal Working Hours:  Sunday through Thursday, 2:30 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.

Interim period, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Modified summer hours to accommodate a four-day work week.
