Francis Marion announces Monahan as new Director of Athletics

Francis Marion University has announced the appointment of Quin Monahan as its new Director of Athletics. Monahan succeeds Murray Hartzler, who has retired after twenty-five years of distinguished service leading FMU Athletics.

Monahan joins FMU after serving 13 years as Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. During his tenure, he led the university from NAIA to NCAA Division II membership. He also oversaw the expansion of athletic programs, significant upgrades to facilities, the enhancement of departmental staffing, and a sustained commitment to both academic and athletic excellence.

“We are delighted to have Quin as our new Director of Athletics,” said FMU President Fred Carter. “His dynamic leadership, competitive drive, and decades of experience will strengthen the winning tradition established by Francis Marion over the years.”

Monahan expressed enthusiasm about his new role and the Florence community.

“Now that I’ve had a few days to settle into both the role and the Florence community, my decision to join the Francis Marion University family has been fully affirmed,” said Monahan.  “We are delighted to be here and enthusiastic about the bright future of FMU Athletics. I look forward to engaging with the campus and community as we continue building on the strong foundation already in place.”

Monahan holds an Associate of Arts in Secondary Education from Kansas City Community College (1988), a Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Science from Oklahoma Wesleyan University (1990), and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Asbury Theological Seminary (1997).

In the past year, seven of FMU’s teams recorded winning seasons, and four programs advanced to NCAA Tournament play, continuing a streak of Patriot student-athletes competing in NCAA post-season play for every full year of competition since 1992.  FMU student-athletes also continue to excel in the classroom, maintaining a collective GPA above 3.1.
